Moylough Castle - Community Monument Fund
Moylough Castle, an excellent example of a medieval hall house, was built in about the first half of the 13th century. Situated on an elevation about 1km west of Moylough town it represents a significant monument and marker for the town and is visible when approaching the town on all sides; once the castle comes into view we know we are home. You could describe it as our insignia, for example our local football and soccer clubs use the castle in their logos and it features in the parish “Reflections” publications.
Unfortunately time has not been kind to the castle and the decline of the castle due to the effects of time and the elements has become more and more visible as the years go by.
In 2023 after much discussion about what could be done to preserve the castle the idea of applying for funding under the Community Monuments Grant was considered and an application was submitted to the Department of Housing Local Government and Heritage in February 2024 via Galway County Council. The services of Aegis Archaeology under Project Lead Frank Coyne was engaged as part of the application. The application was submitted in February 2024 and a grant of €27,000 approved.
Work was completed on the plan in late 2024 and the report is available below.
This report forms the “blueprint” for future funding and preservation work on the castle.
